Sri Lanka will face Zimbabwe in the opening match of 4th Twenty20 World Cup today.



Hosts Sri Lanka open cricket s World Twenty20 against Zimbabwe Tuesday, kicking off the country s biggest ever sports event -- and just three years after the end of a bloody civil war.



Mahela Jayawardene s men will take the field in Hambantota, the southeastern home town of President Mahinda Rajapakse, with hopes high they can end a 16-year wait for their second global title in front of their cricket-obsessed fans.



The match, at 7:30 pm (1400 GMT), starts a three-week cricket fiesta involving 12 teams in coastal Hambantota, hill town Pallekele and the capital Colombo, where the fourth World Twenty20 champions will be crowned on October 7.



The tournament offers the "Teardrop Island" the chance to showcase its lush landscapes, beaches and temples, and turn the page on the 37-year ethnic conflict that claimed up to 100,000 lives.



In 2009, Rajapakse s government declared victory over the Tamil Tiger rebels, a group notorious for suicide bombings. The brutal final offensive prompted a UN Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka earlier this year.



"The T20 World Cup programme will provide an excellent platform to endorse the new Sri Lanka brand during the next three weeks," said Nivard Cabraal, the central bank governor.



"I am confident that this trend will continue in the future, and those so-called international calls for (war crimes) investigation will fade away," he told AFP.



Sri Lanka start the tournament as marginal favourites, although predictions are notoriously difficult in cricket s shortest format, which has revolutionised the sport and divided opinion since its introduction in 2003.



Home advantage will help the hosts, who have a well-balanced side including the newly crowned cricketer of the year, wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara.



Sri Lanka won the 50-over World Cup in 1996 and have reached the tournament s two most recent finals, along with the 2009 World Twenty20 title match which they lost to Pakistan.



"Lots of people have asked us why we have choked in the finals," skipper Jayawardene said. "I d rather be in that situation than being knocked out in earlier rounds."



Defending champions England arrive with a youthful squad shorn of star batsman Kevin Pietersen, who is in international exile after a sequence of bust-ups with team management.



South Africa, the number one Test team, are seeking their first ever limited-overs world title, while the powerful West Indies would be a popular winner. The World Twenty20 is the one major trophy to elude Australia.



India, schooled in Twenty20 cricket in the lucrative Indian Premier League, won the inaugural event in 2007, while mercurial Pakistan will hope to reprise their 2009 title run.



The teams have been divided into four pools of three for the preliminary league, with the top two from each advancing to the Super Eights round.



If the seedings go to plan, fans can expect exciting cricket in the Super Eights -- a week-long race to the semis and final.



England, the West Indies, Sri Lanka and New Zealand are seeded to meet in group one of the Super Eights, with the top two teams making it to the semi-finals.



Group two is already being billed as the "Group of Death", with arch-rivals India and Pakistan seeded to face Australia and South Africa.

COLOMBO: Arch-rivals India and Pakistan will get an early chance to size up each other ahead of the World Twenty20 when they clash in a high-profile practice match in Colombo next Monday.

The match, part of the warm-up schedule drawn up by the International Cricket Council, is the only one of 12 practice games that will be beamed live by the host broadcasters.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez welcomed the chance to play against India before the tournament starts on Tuesday.

“It is usually a high-pressure game and good for us to experience it early,” Hafeez told reporters in Colombo on Wednesday night.

India coach Duncan Fletcher said his team’s two warm-up matches — the other is against host Sri Lanka on Saturday — will be important preparations for the main event.

“We have come here with the belief that we can win the World Twenty20 and it is crucial we get attuned to the conditions,” Fletcher said. “We have obviously got a good build-up.

“We look forward to the two warm-up games which will give us the preparation we require for the tournament.”

India and Pakistan have been drawn in separate groups for the preliminary league, but will meet in the Super Eights round in Colombo on September 30 if the seedings go to plan.

The two nations have played just two official Twenty20 internationals against each other, both during the inaugural world event in South Africa in 2007.

The league match in Durban ended in a tie with India winning the bowl-out, before the two sides met again in the final in Johannesburg, which Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Indians won by five runs.

Bilateral cricket ties between the two nations, which had been suspended since the Mumbai attacks in 2008, are set to resume later this year when Pakistan tour India for three one-dayers and two Twenty20 games.

I have already stated that Sri Lankan Premier League T20 event is taking place now and the players who are taking part in it are most likely to get some advantage. They will get good practice for the Sri Lankan condition and this is something that may give age to both Sri Lanka who is the host of both SLPL and T20 World Cup 2012 and Pakistan. Pakistan may get some advantage because a number of Pakistani players are participating in SLPL and they are also getting good practice. Another country that is in action now is India and they are playing against New Zealand. There will be a lot of pressure for India to perform.
I personally feel that it will be a South Asian country that will win the event and I think that it will be one of the teams among India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Outside of South Asia, England looks to be a balanced team and you can never count out Australia.

There will be a lot of pressure on Indian team to win this event because India is the current World Cup champion of One-day cricket. However, after winning the World Cup in the first part of 2011, things have gone very bad for India and they suffered some heavy losses in international cricket. So, Indian fans want something out of this event. When T20 World Cup started it was 2007. There was a lot of excitement but I think that IPL and other events like SLPL, Big Bash and BPL and even T20 events in England have perhaps decreased the attraction of T20 cricket. The main reason is that almost everyone there is an event of this shortage version of cricket and that is why it is difficult for fans to get too much excited.

Australia's T20 rankings dip below Ireland

Australia will begin this month's Twenty20 World Cup ranked 10th in the world in the shortest form of the game after losing a thrilling match to Pakistan in a 'super over' in Dubai.

The Australians matched the tally of 151 achieved by Pakistan late on Friday, sending the match to the single over shootout, in which they scored 11 runs only for the hosts to edge them by a single run off the last ball of the match.

Having been beaten by seven wickets in their first match against Pakistan earlier in the week, Australia lost the series 2-0 and dropped behind Ireland in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings.

Australia skipper George Bailey, who hit a brilliant 42 off 27 balls in the losing effort, was nevertheless upbeat after an improved performance by his team.

"I'm really pleased that we played a lot closer to what we're capable of," he added. "I think our guys will take a lot of confidence out of it. But to be so close, and then to lose, leaves a lot of questions in your head."

Australia, losing finalists at the last Twenty20 World Cup in 2010, have been grouped with Ireland and West Indies in the opening stage of the fourth version of the tournament, which takes place in Sri Lanka from September 18 to October 7.

Pakistan, who won the second Twenty20 World Cup in 2009 and are ranked fourth in the world, will play New Zealand and Bangladesh in their group matches.
